The Union Cabinet has cleared the 'one nation, one election' proposal that will eventually see simultaneous voting for state and union governments, as well as urban bodies or panchayats.

The Union Cabinet agreed on Wednesday, September 18, to the recommendations of the high-level committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind, fulfilling the BJP's long-standing 'One Nation, One Election' manifesto pledge.

On why the Centre plans to implement 'One Nation, One Election', the Kovind-led high-level committee in its report stated that frequent elections create an atmosphere of uncertainty and impact policy decisions.

In its submissions to the Law Commission and Kovind panel, the Election Commission flagged the need for the large numbers of additional EVMs and VVPATs that will be required, along with the requirements of time and money.
