The notorious Florida immigrant detention center known as “Alligator Alcatraz” may be winding down operations soon, Gov. Ron DeSantis acknowledged on Thursday. His remarks came just hours after the New York Times reported that federal and state officials are in preliminary discussions about the facility’s closure.
Plaintiffs suing the state and federal government over the Alligator Alcatraz immigration detention facility are reacting to reports that the facility could soon close due to high costs.
A lone coyote stunned biologists and others by swimming to Alcatraz Island earlier this year. Initially, biologists thought it swam from San Francisco, about a mile away.
Samples collected by researchers were sent for DNA testing, which confirmed the coyote was a male and matched him to Angel Island’s coyote population.
Initially, experts thought the coyote had crossed the bay from San Francisco, a challenging swim on its own. The lab results told a different story. “Three distinct coyote populations could have been the source of the Alcatraz coyote: San Francisco, Southern Marin, and Angel Island,” Dr. Ben Sacks of MECU told KRON.
