The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for Monday, with gusts up to 65 mph forecast for parts of central California that could cause further fire spread.
Evacuations were ordered in Laws, a tiny Inyo County community just east of Bishop, and also in Chalfant in Mono County — as well as the White Mountain Estates neighborhood between the two. About 30 miles of U.S. 6, a north-south route, were closed.
The blaze, which is being called the Silver Fire, was reported at around 2:10 p.m. on Sunday near Highway 6 and Silver Canyon Road, just north of Bishop.
A vegetation fire was threatening structures in Inyo and Mono counties on Sunday evening, spurring mandatory evacuations in a portion of Mono County.
