Waste reduction efforts are entering a new phase this week, as the city's sanitation agency begins enforcing mandatory composting laws

While clear bags are permitted in the compost bin, regular white kitchen garbage bags and black plastic contractor bags cannot be used, Sanitation said. Items that must be composted include yard waste, like plants, leaves, twigs and grass, as well as food waste such as meat, bones, egg shells, dairy, coffee grounds, fruits and vegetables.

Starting Tuesday, all food scraps, food-soiled paper and yard waste must be separated from the garbage and set out for composting. CBS News New York's Christina Fan has the details.
