Republican Assemblymember Carl DeMaio is launching an initiative to put the issue on Californians’ ballots in 2026.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Two California Republican state lawmakers launched a campaign Wednesday to place a measure on the 2026 ballot that would require voter identification and proof of citizenship at the polls.

The lawmakers behind this voter ID effort acknowledge they're going to need to gather a lot of signatures to get their voter ID initiative on the ballot, but they're confident it can be done.

A Southern California couple has been charged with child endangerment and neglect after more than 20 children were removed from their home in Arcadia, most of whom were born to surrogate mothers, according to police.
