The Supreme Court of India on Thursday, January 9 dismissed review petitions challenging its landmark ruling that denied legal recognition to same-sex marriages in the country. The court firmly maintained that there was no constitutional foundation to grant legal sanction to such unions,

A five judge-judge Constitution bench in October 2023 had held that there is no unqualified right to marriage and same-sex couples cannot claim that as fundamental right.

In its latest ruling on same-sex marriages, the top court stated that there was "no error apparent on the face of the record" in its earlier judgment. The bench emphasised that the views expressed in the original verdict were in accordance with the law and required no further interference.

The Supreme Court on Thursday rejected a batch of petitions seeking review of its judgement by which it had denied to recognise same-sex marriage. In 2023, the top court's verdict had dealt a setback to LGBTQIA+ community and advocates for marriage equality rights.

The resolution, if passed, would signal to the Supreme Court that the state wants marriage equality overturned.
