Sometimes navigating a nutrition label can be tricky for folks experiencing a dietary-related illness or just wanting to be informed about what goes into their bodies. To understand most of them, you need to sift through a lot of jargon — and that takes time. That is why a new federal mandate may pass to ease this package-reading burden.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is looking to propose the inclusion of front-of-package warning labels that detail the calorie, fat, sugar and salt content of various processed food and drink products.

The change is aimed at reducing the prevalence of preventable health conditions like diabetes, heart disease and obesity. A new report released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows obesity rates among adults are higher than 40% in some states.

The FDA is considering food labels to help consumers identify products with unhealthy ingredients, but some experts wonder if this is enough to help in the fight of high obesity rates in the U.S.

The labels are supposed to flag products containing high levels of sodium, saturated fat or added sugars – common features of ultra-processed foods that make up more than half of the calories Americans consume each day.
