On Nov. 2, 1983, then President Ronald Reagan signed the bill named the “King Holiday Bill” that forevermore set the third Monday in January as a federal holiday in order to remember and observe the civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr., a reverend and civil-rights activist, was assassinated at 39. However, he inspired several movements and political changes.

Macon residents came together to not only celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., but also look to clean up their community. Members of Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful and Keep America Beautiful both came out to join in with the Human Rights Campaign to honor King’s legacy.

The holiday falls on the third Monday of January. A bill to make Martin Luther King Jr. Day a federal holiday was introduced on April 8, 1968 — four days after King was assassinated, according to the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

1966: The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. told reporters in Chicago that he was working on a three-phase plan to mobilize the city’s roughly 1 million Blacks. King selected a “typical ghetto apartment on the West Side” at 1550 S. Hamlin Ave. to serve as his base for the following year.

In remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr., Elevé Dance Theater will host a dance workshop to bring the community together while honoring Black history.

Government offices are closed for the holiday, while several museums offer free entry and special programming to honor the civil rights leader.

It’s a way for the city’s King Holiday Committee to raise money for students across Clark County and teach them about the history of the Civil Rights Movement.
