A bill to regulate the hemp industry failed in the Illinois State Capitol. The legislation, House Bill 4293, would have banned Delta 8 packaging designed to look like marijuana and marketing them to kids.

The president of the Illinois Healthy Alternatives Association says a proposal in the General Assembly would decimate the state’s hemp industry. Justin Ward says the bill, which seeks to ban the sale of products like HHC and Delta 8 outside of licensed cannabis dispensaries,

The legislation would've imposed the same testing requirements and taxes on hemp products that the state already has in place for recreational marijuana.

A bill that would have effectively banned the sale of delta-8 and other hemp intoxicants outside of dispensaries is likely dead in the statehouse. Gov. JB Pritzker called the Illinois House's failure to vote on the bill a "tragedy.
