A tropical storm strengthened into Hurricane Gil on Friday in the eastern Pacific Ocean, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Tropical Storm Gil is showing signs of weakening as it moves over cooler waters. Satellite images show a decline in convection, or rising air that indicates strengthening or maintenance of strength, especially in the western half of the storm, downgrading Gil from a hurricane to a tropical storm with sustained winds around 70 mph.

Gil is the seventh named storm to form in the Eastern Pacific in 2025. Storms that form in the Atlantic or the Pacific generally move west, meaning Atlantic storms pose a greater threat to North America. If a storm forms in the Pacific close to land, it can bring damaging winds and rain before pushing out to sea.
