A federal oversight report released last month showed that mail theft is becoming more common inside the Postal Service.
The American Postal Workers Union is encouraging customers to contact elected leaders to make them aware of the problem.
A memorandum of understanding (MOU) between USPS and the APWU went out to employees, stating that eligible full-time employees will receive $10,000 on Aug. 15, 2025 and the remaining $5,000 on Aug. 28, 2026. Certain part-time employees may also be eligible for prorated amounts.
“Robbery of a letter carrier will now allow us to put a $150,000 reward on your head,” she said. “That is up from $50,000 in a previous reporting poster. Postal inspectors can now offer a $100,000 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest and prosecution of those who steal US Mail, which is an increase from $10,000.”
