West Lafayette, near the western bank of the Wabash River, is home to Purdue University with the larger Lafayette across the river. The university has a large impact on both communities.

Purdue University President Mung Chiang stated he would reduce undergraduate admissions because "the city of West Lafayette and this campus are not built for the kind of enrollment that we have today.
