Expanded into 25 states for 2025, IRS Direct File allows eligible taxpayers to submit federal returns free of charge.

A new tool is available to make filing your own taxes easier. Connecticut taxpayers have access to a free service called the IRS Direct File Tool. The online service allows eligible people to directly file federal tax returns with the IRS without needing a third-party software of professional assistance.

Direct File allows some taxpayers to file their returns online directly with the IRS for no cost and is available to about half the country.

The IRS has touted an "enhanced" version of Direct File this year, with the service being expanded to more states as well.

IRS Direct File launched last year as a way to file your taxes with the federal tax agency — for free. At the time, there were only 12 participating pilot states. This tax season, twenty-five states will participate, though the IRS invited all states and the District of Columbia to join in.

Tax season has officially opened. Starting Monday, tax returns can be filed for 2024 income. This year the Internal Revenue Service is making it easier for more people to file online for free, through its Direct File program. That was introduced last year as a pilot, and this year it is being expanded.
