Despite efforts to promote Windows 11, adoption is slow, with many users, including 42.87% of Steam users, still on Windows 10. Windows 11's market share is only 36.6% globally.

The new strategy is a move to boost Windows 11 adoption rates ahead of Windows 10 end of support. Users with older hardware can now upgrade to Windows 11 without replacing their entire system.

While a post on Microsoft's Tech Community blog indicates that the free upgrade path from Windows 10 to 11 is only for a limited time, Microsoft says that's a mistake.

Microsoft 365 Apps for personal accounts will only receive security updates until the end of support in August 2028.
