Lubbock and much of the South Plains are under a winter weather advisory through 6 a.m. Friday, with additional snow accumulations of an inch or less and winds gusting as high as 40 mph expected, according to the National Weather Service in Lubbock.

Poor conditions on secondary roads in some portions of the D.C. region and worries about refreezing has prompted another round of school delays and closings for Friday — with many students having missed an entire week of classes.

: As of 10:45 a.m., 50 districts have now closed. Only seven districts stayed with a two-hour delay. EARLIER: Some schools made announcements about Thursday morning delays as early as Wednesday evening due to the weather.

"All Austin ISD schools and offices will operate on normal schedules Thursday, Jan. 9, but due to rain and cold temperatures, all afterschool outdoor athletic activities will be canceled and any other outdoor activities will move indoors," Austin ISD wrote on Facebook.

The Washington, D.C. region is still grappling with the effects of Monday's winter storm, which dumped nearly a foot of snow in some areas. The storm brought snow and ice, forcing schools to close and creating hazardous driving conditions.

Some schools will be closed or have early dismissal today due to cold temperatures and expected snow. Dayton Christian School and the Horizon Science Academy are closed in Montgomery County. Preble Shawnee Local Schools announced on social media that they are closed “due to inclement weather” in Preble County.

The warning says the heaviest snow is expected between noon and 3 p.m., with the northeast Panhandles' heaviest snowfall around 3-9 p.m.
