HELSINKI (Reuters) - Sweden's army will buy tanks from German-French defence equipment maker KNDS for 22 billion Swedish crowns ($1.97 billion), the Nordic country's government said on Thursday 9 January 2025.

Sweden is purchasing 44 new German Leopard 2 A8 main battle tanks and plans to modernize its existing fleet of 66 Leopard 2 tanks as well as other combat vehicles in its military arsenal, the Defence Ministry announced in Stockholm on Thursday.

In a significant move to bolster its security, Sweden, the newest NATO member, is set to invest over €1.91 billion in acquiring new tanks and refurbishing its existing fleet.
