My first book, Literature, Modernity, and the Practice of Resistance: Japanese and Taiwanese Fiction, 1960‒1990 (Brill, 2007), compares responses to modernity in the literary cultures of Japan and Taiwan during the postwar period.

Margaret Hillenbrand is Associate Professor of Modern Chinese Literature and Culture and Tutorial Fellow in Chinese at Wadham. After taking a BA in Chinese and Japanese at the University of Cambridge, she worked and studied in East Asia for some years before completing a DPhil at Oxford in East Asian comparative literature.

Margaret Hillenbrand is Professor of Modern Chinese Literature and Visual Culture at the University of Oxford. Her research focusses on literary and visual studies in twentieth-century China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan, especially cultures of secrecy and protest.

Margaret Hillenbrand argues that a vast underclass of Chinese workers exist in “zombie citizenship,” a state of dehumanizing exile from the law and its safeguards. Many others also feel precarious—sensing that they live on a precipice, with the constant fear of falling into this abyss of dispossession, disenfranchisement, and dislocation.
