The World Athletics Championships, known as the IAAF World Championships in Athletics until 2019, are a biennial athletics competition organized by World Athletics, formerly International Association of Athletics Federations.

The following is a list of world sports championships, including some sporting events which use a different name with a similar meaning.In some sports, there is a world series, but that term usually has a somewhat different meaning. Tournaments which are formally defunct or where a further event is not currently planned are marked with a gray background.

A world championship is generally an international competition open to elite competitors from around the world, representing their nations, and winning such an event will be considered the highest or near highest achievement in the sport, game, or ability.
