The Dark-eyed Junco is common in North American forests, but did you know that Oregon has its very own version? The Oregonian Dark-eyed Junco has a dark brown hood, light brown back, buffy sides, and a white belly. They’re easy to spot in flight since they flap continuously and pump their tails so the outer tail feathers flash. Like most perching birds, Dark-eyed Juncos hop as they forage on the ground. They can travel up to 12 inches in one hop! Video by Mathesont, Flickr [Video Description: A

Spotted this Dark-eyed Junco today – a sure sign of the season changing! These sparrows are a common sight in Michigan during fall and winter, often foraging on the ground for seeds. Interesting Fact: Dark-eyed Juncos can survive sub-zero temperatures by fluffing up their feathers to trap heat. 🌨️🐤 #DarkEyedJunco #BirdWatching #MichiganNature #Snowbird | All About • Michigan

That little grey bird flew 500 miles to spend winter in your yard. You haven't noticed. ❄️ Juncos are called "snowbirds" - you ONLY see them in winter. They're ground feeders. Can't use hanging feeders. Need seeds on actual ground. They need to eat 30% of their body weight DAILY just to survive till morning. Your leaf blower clearing snow? Just buried their breakfast. That "boring grey bird" traveled farther for your backyard than you traveled all year. Maybe scatter some seeds on the ground. Th
