Born in 1891 in Cincinnati, Ohio, Mamie Smith was a trailblazer, the first Black artist to record a blues song. Her 1920 hit ‘Crazy Blues’ shattered stereotypes and opened doors for countless Black musicians. Born in Cincinnati in 1891, Smith began her career as a child performer, touring with a minstrel troupe before moving into Harlem’s vaudeville and cabaret scene.
