Famous literary master Mark Twain, whose real name was Samuel Clemens, was raised in Hannibal, Missouri, where his tales The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884) were set. Twain was known for smoking a pipe, and it became a part of his iconic persona. Once owned by Twain, this pipe is a part of our permanent collection and was donated to us in 1912 by the biographer and close friend of Twain, Albert Bigelow Paine. Twain himself visited the MU camp
