Episode 8 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption at the summit of Kīlauea began last night, February 3, 2025, at 9:52 p.m. HST. Fountaining continues as of this morning. Episode 8 was preceded by small, sporadic spatter fountains that began on Sunday evening, February 2, which began to increase in intensity in the afternoon on February 3 until 9:52 p.m., when sustained fountaining began. Fountains from the north vent reached up to 250 feet (80 meters) high and fed multiple lava streams on the crat

Kīlauea summit eruptive activity resumed just before 3:00 p.m. HST today, January 22, 2025. Small lava dome fountains in the north vent are feeding short lava flows in the southwest part of the caldera. Volcanic gas emissions are elevated compared to during the eruptive pause. This marks the beginning of the fifth episode of the eruption that began on December 23, 2024, in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. This one went to 11... Episode 11 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption of Kīlauea within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park has come to an end. It started at 6:26 p.m. HST on February 25, and paused at 7:06 a.m. HST on February 26. The opening phases of the episode included fountains up to 600 feet high! This video clip by C. Gansecki shows those high fountains at about 8:38 p.m. on February 25 as seen from Wahinekapu (Steaming Bluff). Make sure you have the volume turned up... More information abo

Episode 7 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption began at 6:42 p.m. HST last night, January 27, and continued through the night. Lava fountains are currently feeding a small flow onto the crater floor. This timelapse video is from the KWcam, which is located on the west caldera rim and looks east across Kaluapele (Kīlauea summit caldera) within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory is monitoring this activity. Based on the pattern of past episodes, this episode is

HVO Kilauea ORANGE/WATCH - Kīlauea eruption continues at the summit; status downgrade to ORANGE/WATCH: Sep 11, 2023 18:10 The eruption within Kīlauea's summit caldera that began yesterday afternoon continues, with eruptive activity confined to Halemaʻumaʻu crater. HVO is lowering Kīlauea’s volcano alert level from WARNING to WATCH because the style of eruption and fissure location have stabilized, the initial extremely high effusion rates have declined, and no infrastructure is threatened. Kīlauea summit lava fountains were active for about 10 hours during episode 22. V2cam, which is located on the east rim of Kaluapele (the summit caldera), captured the views shown here, just before sunrise on May 16. In case you missed the news, HVO installed another livestream camera on the south rim of the caldera, the V3cam, and it is available here: url.usgs.gov/v3cam | USGS Volcanoes

For this month's video update of the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, we'd like to introduce you to a friend of ours. This friend has been monitoring changes of the ground surface in Yellowstone for decades and is so good that it can detect movement of just a few millimeters in magnitude (just a fraction of an inch). The friend? A continuous GPS station! There are dozens of continuous GPS stations throughout the Yellowstone region, and they show us that the ground in Yellowstone is always changi

Today (August 6) started early for Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientists. Vigorous lava fountaining associated with episode 30 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption of Kīlauea volcano, Hawaii, began at 1:20 a.m. local time, and HVO geologists were immediately on site to collect data. Once the day dawned, the work included a helicopter trip to the caldera floor to sample lava for chemical analysis. That information can be used to better understand the conditions in the magma chamber, and therefo

Research, monitoring, communication. Every day is #EarthDay at the USGS. Volcano monitoring and research conducted at the five US volcano observatories advances our understanding of active volcanoes and hazards, and enables the USGS Volcano Hazards Program to provide information and warnings of volcanic activity in the United States. Each observatory is assigned a geographic area of responsibility (Alaska, Hawaii, California, Cascade Range, Yellowstone). The observatories and their partner organ

In the air and on the ground, HVO scientists are collecting data and assessing hazards for Kīlauea's middle East Rift Zone eruption. On September 18, 2024, around 3:15 pm HST, a fourth vent system opened just west of Nāpau Crater. Lava has been flowing over the western cliffs of Nāpau Crater and onto the crater floor. Good morning, and welcome to the newest eruption of Kīlauea! This morning, December 23, at approximately 2 a.m. HST, elevated earthquake activity began at the volcano's summit. By 2:30 a.m., the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory observed eruptive activity in Kīlauea summit webcam images, indicating that an eruption has commenced within Halemaʻumaʻu and the summit caldera in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory is elevating Kīlauea’s volcano alert level from ADVI
