Beyond the initial demonstration, the story of anesthesia is deeply human. Dr. Crawford Long had first used ether successfully in 1842 but did not publish, delaying recognition. The success sparked a bitter, lifelong rivalry among the pioneers over credit and patents. Horace Wells, who experimented with nitrous oxide, tragically descended into despair. Some religious and medical figures initially opposed anesthesia, arguing it was unnatural to interfere with divinely ordained pain. Yet the overw
