Queen Liliʻuokalani wrote Aloha ʻOe after witnessing an emotional farewell between a Hawaiian colonel and a young woman at Maunawili Ranch on the island of Oʻahu. Moved by the tender goodbye, she was inspired to write a song capturing the feeling of parting with a loved one.
