An influx of cedar waxwing nestlings at the VINS Center for Wild Bird Rehabilitation means that nesting season is coming to an end! Cedar waxwings are one of the latest nesting birds in the area. In the video below, you can see these frugivores (fruit eaters) enjoying one of their morning meals which happen every hour. These young birds are almost ready for release and will soon develop their well known, silky plumage. During the summer months, they will supplement their diet with insects but in

This juvenile Cedar Waxwing is starting to eat on its own - and it loves pokeweed berries! Cedar Waxwings are frugivores. As adults, they eat a fruit-heavy diet, often surviving on fruits alone for months at a time! We have a variety of native fruit-bearing plants around the Center's property, and we try to utilize these when possible to give our patients (especially youngsters raised in rehab) natural food sources that they will encounter in the wild. Though American Pokeweed is loved by many o

A helping beak! This fledgling cedar waxwing is helping out some neighbouring nestlings by feeding them. Cedar waxwings actually do this quite a bit, and it's known as allofeeding. That's when feeding care is directed toward non-offspring and non-siblings. It's actually very sweet and iwe'll take all the help we can get! Waxwings are strongly flock-oriented, so it's very possible that their tight-knit social structure encourages food-sharing beyond the immediate family to provide a benefit to th

One of our patients, this beautiful Cedar Waxwing fledgling, is soaking in some Vitamin D today. She is also listening to the sounds around here which include a flock of Waxwings currently feeding on our Elderberry bushes. By us having a lot of native berry shrubs here, it attracts a variety of birds to our site. It helps on days like this when we have a young orphan that needs to acclimate to their environment. Our little charge will soon join the wild flock and be on her way, once she is compl

Cedar Waxwing Migration: Where Do Waxwings Go in Winter?

This beautiful fledgeling was found in locust valley, the finder picked it up because she thought it was injured. Even after being told that it was a healthy fledgling and asked if she could she please return it, she said no, she refused to tell a 3rd party exactly where she found it and just left. So the third party (who happened to be an old staff member) brought this cedar waxwing to our wildlife hospital and we will now care for it until it’s old enough to be on its own. Why is this bird cal

Are There Cedar Waxwings In Texas

Did you know that Cedar Waxwings get their name from two distinctive features: their association with cedar trees and the waxy red tips on their secondary wing feathers? They also LOVE to eat fruit so if you want to attract them to your yard, plant native trees and shrubs that bear small fruits, such as dogwood, serviceberry, cedar, juniper, hawthorn, and winterberry. https://swvawildlifecenter.org/make-a-donation/ #cedarwaxwing #birds #wildliferehab | Southwest Virginia Wildlife Center of Roano
