To snowy owls, the frigid Minnesota winter with its snow-covered landscape must feel a bit like home. They’re native to the arctic tundra, with nesting grounds in northern Canada and Alaska. But from November to March, during the long dark arctic winter, some of them fly down to the most northern parts of the Lower 48. This season, TRC’s raptor hospital admitted several of these northern visitors: Patient 25-1214, admitted Nov. 12 after falling into wastewater at a treatment plant, got a bath, a

We are blown away by your generosity and support of our mission to ensure the health of owls, hawks, falcons, vultures, osprey, and eagles, and the beautiful world we all share. We are still in the process of calculating the final results of our Give to the Max Day yesterday, but we can say with certainty, we exceeded our goal of $60,000! Thats enough to feed the more then 1,000 raptor patients we treat each year plus our raptor ambassadors for the next year. Every single dollar makes an impact,

🦉 A raptor release is a very special moment when we get to see our mission, fulfilled. This wild great horned owl was rehabilitated at our Raptor Center and then released earlier this year, near Lake Pueblo State Wildlife Area on a beautiful evening in the late summer. Our NEXT wild owl release is coming up on Saturday, December 21. . . and YOU are invited! The owl release will take place during our Winter Solstice Celebration, from 4 - 7 pm, at the River Campus: 5200 Nature Center Rd, 81003. A

2021 was an exciting year here at the Alaska Raptor Center, we wanted to share your top 10 favorite posts from 2021! #5 Luci, a Bald Eagle and Raptor-in-Residence here at the Alaska Raptor Center, received a special treat today, a whole salmon donated by the Sitka Sound Science Center. Did you know, Bald Eagles can eat a wide variety of prey? While fish is the centerpiece of a Bald Eagle’s diet, they will also eat birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals, including carrion. Narwhal, a Great Horned Owl and Raptor-in-Residence here at the Alaska Raptor Center, working with one of her Avian Care Specialists. Narwhal was sent to our Center after being struck by a car. The collision fractured her left humerus and scraped one of the feather tufts off the top of her head. After several months it was clear that, though she was able to fly, her wingbeats remained far too loud for her to silently swoop down on live prey. Narwhal now has an important job, helping us educate t

2021 was an exciting year here at the Alaska Raptor Center, we wanted to share your top 10 favorite posts from 2021! #4 Flash, a Northern Goshawk and Raptor-in-Residence, is our only accipiter hawk here at the Alaska Raptor Center. Northern Goshawks are a bigger, fiercer, relative of the Sharp-shinned and Cooper’s Hawks that prowl suburbs and backyards. They are accipiters, a type of hawk with short, broad wings and a long rudderlike tail that give it superb aerial agility. | Alaska Raptor Cente

Qigiq, a Snowy Owl and Raptor-in-Residence here at the Alaska Raptor Center, spending the day in the Raptor Weathering Yard. As part of their ongoing care, our Raptors-in-Residence must be exposed to natural weather elements each day. The Weathering Yard gives our residents a safe spot to perch during the day, while also exposing them to sunlight, rain and other elements, which are essential for their physical and mental health. Each day, a different arrangement of raptor species can be viewed f

After a two-month stay at TRC, a red-tailed hawk was released back to the wild on January 10. The bird arrived at our raptor hospital on Nov. 11, 2024 with internal trauma and a previously injured toe, or digit, as we call them. The toe was missing its talon, and although the injury was old, the tip of the toe’s bone was infected and painful. Dr. Kaylee, TRC’s veterinary intern, came to the hawk’s rescue! She took the hawk to surgery, removed the small piece of infected bone, and closed the skin
