Red-shouldered Hawks hunt from perches below the forest canopy or at the edge of a water body, searching silently for prey. You may have heard that owls can turn their heads all the way around, up to 270 degrees, but it may surprise you that hawks have a similar ability. Both hawks and owls have fixed eyes, so they need to move their heads to see. They have 14 neck vertebrae (twice the amount that humans have) which allows them to twist their necks much farther than we can, enhancing their view.

In Atlanta, I’m probably not wrong to think I see more red-shouldered hawks in the winter ❄️ than any other time of year. Our year-round residents are joined by red-shouldered hawks migrating here and staying until spring 🌸– and they’re adaptable to all sorts of habitats including residential urban areas 🏠 Red-shouldered hawks might be seen hanging around bird feeders, but their broad wings and short tail make it hard for them to maneuver fast enough to prey on smaller and quicker moving birds

No “red” on this red-tailed hawk. An uncommon sighting, this is a leucistic (not albino) red-tailed hawk. Leucism is similar to albinism, however, albinos lack the ability to create melanin, one specific type of pigment. Leucistic animals usually have normal eye color, unlike albinos, which generally have red eyes. 🪶🕊Visit our Center Thursday through Saturday to see this unique, beautiful hawk in person.
