Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, the jump blues, jazz, bebop and R&B alto saxophonist and blues shouter was born this day in 1917. It's significant to note in 1948, John Coltrane began playing in Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson's band. This experience marked Trane's switch from the alto sax to his signature tenor sax, as Vinson only had an opening for a tenor.
